...because your life is worth more than the price of a life vest...
Jim Says: "I have lost 3 friends, people that I knew in sailing, two sailors and a coach, and all three died because they weren't wearing a life vest. Don't become a statistic." Modern vests are a huge advance from the ones we hated back in the 60's and 70's, comfortable, adjustable, some with pockets for essentials. The newest vests also use the latest non-PVC foams, healthier, less breakdown, a bit bulkier, but lighter than older foams. You don't have to buy one of mine, but buy one somewhere, and wear it. The life you save will be your own.
NOTE: you can now find a number of 'bouyancy aids', life vests imported from other countries, that are NOT US Coast Guard Approved. (One of them, from Zhik, we like enough that we might carry it here later in 2010.) While these may be lighter, more comfortable, and within the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS 40), they are NOT legal in the US and you could be subject to a large fine if you do not have a USCG-approved vest on board for each person. That effectively limits these 'bouyancy aids' to larger boats (Lightning, E scow, Melges 24, etc) who have the storage space to carry USCG-approved vest - such as the familiar, hated, and cheap orange horse-collar vests - in addition to the 'aids' worn by the crew. That effectively means that 'bouyancy aids' should never be considered by for catamarans or single-handed boats.
Which brings us to a pet peeve - sailing instructors and coaches should ALWAYS wear what is required by the law. We set examples simply by our appearances, and our appearances and behavior should always reflect what is required in the Rules and under the laws and regulations that govern us on the water wherever we choose to play.
