Harken: That's almost all you need to know about blocks (the other name is Ronstan, made in Australia, which makes it a higher-price choice for the same functions). We stock the small stuff, carbo blocks and micro blocks, the things that small boat sheets systems are made of, plus control and vang systems for many boats. We also have the important ratchet blocks, the full and mid-size regular ratchets, plus the wonderful 57mm Carbo Ratchamatic that can be a small boat mainsheet ratchet or a gennaker ratchet on a Formula 18 catamaran.

Although we are no longer stocking Bullet Blocks - the Carbos are lighter and less expensive -we still have more than a few laying about. If you really want Bullets, what we have left is priced really cheap. Drop us a note to ask.

Some words about diameter; some sailors are in the habit of stuffing the largest line that they can between the faces of a block in the mistaken notion that the fat line will be easier to handle. Unfortunately, they are working against themselves, fighting the internal resistance of the larger line to turn over a small block. The end result is a system that is harder to pull in, and does not play out as easily, as one that is properly sized. A safe working formula for most double-braided lines (a double-braided line is one that has a braided core with a braided cover over it) is that the block diameter should be about 7 times the diameter of the line, or 8 to 1 if the line is very 'stiff' with a tight weave on the outer cover. So the over-sized half-inch mainsheet seen on some catamarans would need 3 1/2-inch blocks (90mm!) to run smoothly without additional friction. On single-braided lines, the safe ratio is closer to 5 to 1 for a medium braid or even down to 3 to 1 if the line is a very loose braid, so something like 3mm Endura can be used on Harken 16mm blocks, or 8mm Bzzz with 40mm Carbos without adding internal friction.

Some recommendations for small boat sailors (if you are looking for parts for one of the boats we support, go the that boat's page to link to our parts for that boat) ~

» Boom vangs for small boats - 3:1, use #235 and #244 (Micro blocks), and for 4:1 use #342 (29mm Carbo) and #2658 (40mm Carbo fiddle). Cascading vangs are special problems, buy a complete kit instead of trying to build it yourself. We do stock the cascading vang for the C420.

» Mainsheets, for little youth boats, use 29mm Carbo blocks, #340 if it needs to swivel, or #348 plus a shackle if it should not swivel. (Hint - blocks on the boom usually should swivel so the line never binds on the block cheeks. Blocks on bridles or travelers usually should not swivel so that the sheet between that block and the boom does not develop twists). For larger mixed youth/adult single-handers and larger dinghies, 2+ persons, use 40mm Carbos. Cats are typically 7:1 or the newer 8:1 that is standard on all Nacras, built up from 57mm Carbos. A 7:1 system uses #2612 + #340 and #2641. For 8:1, use #2619 and #2654.

» Jibs, usually use 29mm Carbos in various combinations depending on the purchase needed. Modern cats with self-tacking jib gear use 16mm blocks for the sheeting/purchase parts, and Micros on the trim end.

» Spinnakers on smaller dinghys, use 29mm Carbos, on larger 3+ person dinghies and small keelboats, use 40mm Carbos. On cats, use the 57mm Ratchmatics, either in pairs for crews with less arm strength, or with a #2636 40mm Carbo as a turning block.

With one exception (#2612) all blocks come as pictured; if the photo shows a shackle, then shackle is standard. (We add a #340 to the #2612 so it can be used in a 7:1 system.)
